Rights of a Child

We continue to explore the Rights of a Child during inquiry time. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has established that each child has "survival" rights such as water, food, shelter, and healthcare as well as "protection" rights like safety, love, and care. One of the important concepts we have learned is how some children do not have enough food and clean water to keep them nourished.

We have been reading many informational books, but we are especially impressed by the story of Ryan in the book Ryan and Jimmy: And the Well in Africa that Brought Them Together by Herb Shoveller. In 1998, Ryan was a first-grader who learned from his teacher that there were people in the world dying because they did not have clean water. He was inspired to make a change and did!
