Read To Feed Update

TAISM's first grade classes gathered together today for a Read To Feed fundraiser update.

First, Ms. Denise's class sang a beautiful song to us called "Together We Can Change The World."

Next, Ms. Carissa's class showed the grand total we raised. We were so excited to find out that we raised...

584 rials! Finally, 1MW revealed the items we will be purchasing for families in need...

Wow! Two heifers, one goat, three flocks of chicks, two groups of bees and we can even pay to send one girl to school!

Thank you to friends and family who helped us do our part to change the world together!

First grade classes started having their P.E. classes outside this week. Please be sure to send your child to school with a hat and water bottle so they are prepared for this. Thanks!

Important Dates & Tent Day

Hello 1MW Families!

Just a few new updates for the calendar:

  • The Terry Fox run has been moved to December 10th
  • Rainbow Day (originally on December 10th) will be moved to January 14th. This will still be a half-day for students.
  • No school on December 2nd and 3rd as these are National Day Holidays. When we return to school on Sunday, December 6th, it will be a Day 5.
  • There is no school this Thursday, November 26th, for the American Thanksgiving Holiday.
  • There will be NO Learn to Swim this weekend due to the holiday and also NO Learn to Swim over the National Day holiday weekend (Dec. 2-5).
We had a great time during Omani Tent Day while learning about Omani culture from TAISM's extraordinary volunteers.

Here we are dressed up and ready to go!

First we sampled children's "coffee" (juice), honey doughnuts, and dates.

Next we had henna and the Omani flag painted on our hands.

Then we learned how a kummah (an Omani cap-like head dress worn by males) is made. We also smelled frankincense.

After that, we saw Arabic break being made. We learned that the three ingredients used are: flour, water, and salt. It was very thin and crispy...and delicious! We couldn't get enough!

Finally, we enjoyed some traditional Omani music and danced.

Omani Tent Day Tomorrow!

Happy National Day!

We will be concluding our week of Discover Oman tomorrow by celebrating National Day with TAISM's very own Omani Tent Day. During this time, students often wear traditional Omani clothing. If children would like to do so, they need to wear their usual school uniforms to school and bring their traditional clothing in a bag. Students will be allowed to change before going outside for Tent Day. Then, they will change back into their uniform after the celebration.

If you would like to join us, 1MW is scheduled to be outside 11:15 - 11:40.

Ghala Hike Adventure

We had a wonderful time on our hike and hot spring field trip! Thank you to these fabulous parent chaperones: Aaron, Monika, Claudia, Wendy, and Amanda. Your help was much appreciated!

If you were not able to join us on their field trip, keep in mind that we have three field trips in February for which you can volunteer. Here are some pics from this adventure:

Mr. Everett taught us about the natural hot spring...

We saw goats up high (the white blobs!) before we even started the hike...

We learned about a falaj which is a channel that is dug into the earth and used to distribute water. Sometimes the water originates from a hot spring and sometimes a falaj carries water from a pond or running water. There are thousands in Oman! To learn more, click here:

Getting ready to start the hike...
Valdemar finds a piece of pottery...

The ascent...

Not quite to the top yet. Here's the beautiful view...

As we hiked, we talked about the different colors of the rocks and the beautiful "pokey" tree branches. We thought this rock formation looked like a turtle...

Snack time at the top...

During our adventure, we were like scientists and collected notes in our Field Notes Journal. Take a look at some great examples...
