Living Things Guest Speakers

We have been learning about living things over the past few weeks. As part of this Inquiry unit, we have had three special guest speakers visit us. A huge “Thank you” goes out to all three guest speakers. We appreciate them taking the time to share their knowledge with us!

Our own Mrs. Johnson (middle school science teacher) shared her knowledge of the desert habitat and camels. She also brought some camel bones for us to touch! We discussed the unique characteristics of camels that help them live in their specific environment. Did you know that camels have wide feet so they don’t sink into the sand? We also couldn't believe that camels can drink 5-21 gallons of water a day!

Tania Al-Said, a TAISM parent and co-founder of the Environment Society of Oman, shared her knowledge of animals found in Oman. Did you know that Arabian Sea humpback whales are endangered? Unlike other whales, Arabian Sea humpbacks do not migrate. This means we need to take care of them and their ocean habitat so they do not become extinct!
She also talked with us about the amazing research her team has been doing with frankincense.

Finally, our very own Mrs. Hindash (middle school science teacher) visited us today to teach us about the different biomes of the world. Did you know that habitats such as coral reefs can be damaged by humans? Like Ms. Tania’s presentation, we learned how our actions can have a positive or negative impact on the world around us. We will be talking more in class about our own personal responsibilities to keep the environment clean and safe.
